Overview

St. Barthélemy, often known as St. Barts, is located near St Martin and Anguilla. It is a glamorous and picturesque island in the Caribbean, famous for its stunning beaches, upscale lifestyle, and French charm. The island’s history is as intriguing as its beautiful landscape.

Originally inhabited by the Arawak and Carib peoples, St Barts was discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1493 and named after his brother Bartolomeo. The island, however, did not attract much interest from European powers due to its lack of fresh water and fertile land.

It was first settled by the French in 1648, and after a brief period under the Order of Malta, it was sold to Sweden in 1784. St. Barts remained a Swedish colony for nearly a century, which is why the capital, Gustavia, still carries a Swedish name and has some Swedish architectural influences. In 1878, France repurchased the island, and it has remained French ever since, now as a part of the French overseas collectivity.

The island is renowned for its luxurious ambiance, attracting celebrities and wealthy visitors from around the world. The island’s main attractions revolve around its stunning beaches, with places like St. Jean Beach and Gouverneur Beach offering clear turquoise waters and soft white sands, perfect for sunbathing, swimming, and water sports.

The capital, Gustavia, is a charming harbor town known for its high-end boutiques, fine dining restaurants, and historical sites. You can visit the Wall House Museum to learn about the island’s history or explore the ruins of Fort Karl, which offers panoramic views of the town and the harbor.

Nature lovers can hike to Colombier Beach, a secluded paradise accessible only by foot or boat, or visit the natural pools at Grand Fond, where waves crash dramatically against the rocks. The island is also known for its sailing and yachting, with the St Barts Bucket Regatta being a highlight of the year.

Its blend of French sophistication, Caribbean beauty, and laid-back island life makes it a truly unique destination, perfect for those seeking both relaxation and luxury in a stunning tropical setting.
