Overview

The Bahamas is an enchanting archipelago of 700 islands and 2,400 cays located in the Atlantic Ocean, located 80 km (50 mi) south-east of the coast of Florida (USA) and north of Cuba. The islands were originally inhabited by the Lucayan people, a branch of the Taíno, before becoming the site of Christopher Columbus’s first landing in the New World in 1492 on San Salvador Island. The Spanish initially claimed the Bahamas but did not settle the islands, leading to them becoming a haven for pirates in the 17th century, including the infamous Blackbeard.

In 1718, the British established control over the Bahamas, turning Nassau, the capital, into a bustling colonial port. The islands prospered under British rule, especially during the American Civil War and Prohibition, when they became key centers for blockade running and rum smuggling. The Bahamas gained independence in 1973, and today, they are a vibrant member of the Commonwealth.

The Bahamas are famous for their breathtaking beaches, crystal-clear waters, and abundant marine life, making them a paradise for beach lovers and water sports enthusiasts. Nassau, located on New Providence Island, offers a mix of history and modern attractions, including the stunning Atlantis Paradise Island resort, the historic Queen’s Staircase, and the vibrant Straw Market.

For those looking to explore natural wonders, Exuma is known for its pristine cays, where you can swim with the famous Exuma pigs at Pig Beach or dive into the Thunderball Grotto, featured in James Bond films. The island of Grand Bahama is home to Lucayan National Park, where you can discover one of the longest underwater cave systems in the world.

The Bahamas also boasts unique experiences like visiting the pink sands of Harbour Island or taking a boat tour to the Blue Holes of Andros. The Junkanoo Festival, a lively celebration with music, dance, and colorful costumes, offers a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of the islands.Latest News
