Overview

Saba, known as the “Unspoiled Queen” of the Caribbean, is a small but captivating island with breathtaking natural beauty. Located in the northeastern Caribbean Sea, south-west of St Martin, Saba is the smallest special municipality of the Netherlands. The island’s history dates back to its original inhabitants, the Ciboney and later the Arawak people, who lived there before the arrival of Europeans.

It wasn’t until the 17th century that the island was settled. The Dutch West India Company established control in 1632, and despite brief occupations by the English and French, Saba has remained under Dutch administration ever since.

Saba’s remote location and rugged terrain—dominated by the dormant volcano Mount Scenery, the highest point in the Netherlands—have preserved its pristine environment and traditional way of life. The island never developed large plantations or experienced the same level of colonization as other Caribbean islands, leading to its nickname as the “Unspoiled Queen.”

Today, it is a paradise for nature lovers and adventure seekers. The island’s main attraction is Mount Scenery, which offers a challenging hike through lush rainforest to the summit, where you can enjoy panoramic views of the island and the surrounding sea. The island is also a world-renowned destination for scuba diving, with the Saba Marine Park protecting vibrant coral reefs, diverse marine life, and dramatic underwater landscapes, making it a favorite spot for divers and snorkelers.

The island’s charming capital, The Bottom, and the picturesque village of Windwardside are known for their quaint cottages, friendly locals, and well-preserved colonial architecture. The island has no beaches, but its dramatic cliffs and rocky coastline add to its unique charm.

Its cultural heritage is also reflected in its traditional crafts, particularly Saba lace, a delicate form of needlework that has been passed down through generations. Visitors can learn about this craft and other local traditions at the Saba Museum.

Whether you’re exploring its trails, diving in its clear waters, or simply enjoying its peaceful atmosphere, Saba offers a unique and tranquil experience, far removed from the hustle and bustle of more commercialized Caribbean destinations.
